A Wake Up Call
The passage of the new Texas Business
Margin Tax in 2006, (with no relief in sight and our increasing property
taxes) is a wake up call for business owners in the great State of Texas. Much like the $700 billion “bailout” of our financial system passed
by the US Congress in October 2008, our Texas Legislators applied the same
level of thinking to the new Texas Business Margin Tax under duress by the
Texas Supreme Court on funding state-wide education.
Feedback
As noted by State District 150 Rep Debbie Riddle in
her article dated May 15, 2008,
“In
the last few weeks my office has been flooded by calls and e-mails from
business owners who are just now beginning to realize the full impact of this
ludicrous new margins tax. The
attitudes of these calls and letters have ranged from white-hot anger to
complete disbelief to absolute despondency and depression over the reality that
this tax will put them out of business.”
Can You Hear US Now?
However, the word in Austin is that
our Legislators have not heard much feedback about the new Business Margin
Tax. Really? Well, that will change drastically with
the support of Business Owners across Texas!
Worth the Effort
As some local Texas Business Owners
learned in the March 2006 and March 2008 Primaries in Texas, influencing or
replacing (entrenched) Incumbent Senators and Representatives (in the good old
boy network) is a challenge, and can be downright nasty, with significant funds
coming in from outside each District to support the Incumbent, but the effort
is well worth the results of getting the right person representing Business
Owners.
GrassRoots/Focused Effort Needed
In order for Business Owners to be successful in
getting pro-business Representatives in Austin, a grass roots effort must be
established and a well thought out plan executed, not much different than a
successful Business Plan. However,
as most, if not all, business owners are independent minded, maverick types,
with some lone wolfs, with no time to waste, they must get out of their comfort
zones and develop a plan that works well with other business owners. The Game Plan laid out here is a proven
plan that works well.
