Action Required
1. KNOW WHO REPRESENTS YOU – Texas is divided in to 31 Senate Districts, with each District having 1 Senator (out of 31 serving 4 year terms), and each Senator having ~5 District House Representatives (out of 150 serving 2 year terms) in that Senator’s District, so the first thing a Business Owner needs to do is understand who represents them, which can be easily found by entering your home address information “Who Represents Me?”
2. KNOW WHO VOTED FOR THE BMT – By going to Voting Record.
3.
SEND A LETTER/E-MAIL TO YOUR SENATOR & REP
– Using the Example Letter:
- TARGET YOUR EFFORTS– Business Owners need to target ALL REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVES WHO VOTED FOR THE BUSINESS MARGIN TAX (they will be the most responsive) and ALL REPUBLICAN SENATORS. Go to EVERY Republican Senator and Rep up for vote right now and force them to tell you where they are on this important business issue.
- TAKE ACTION – If your Representative and Senator stands to repeal the Business Margin Tax, thank them for hearing your voice and their support of Texas business. If he or she does not commit to repeal the BMT, then send the Op Ed Article to your local paper and to your mailing list, which will help get our point across against their position.
Go To: Example Letter/E-mail
Before next session of texas legislature January 2009
4.
Identify Influential Area
Business Owners – This does not necessarily mean the most
money or wealth, but rather business owners with a wide range of contacts and a
good mailing list in your area. Local like minded business owners in sales - real estate, insurance,
recruiting, etc. - are some of the best business owners to have in your core
group. A like minded attorney who
understands the political process is also helpful. A good place to look for like minded businessmen, includes:
-
Small
Business CPAs who are like minded to share the BOOT cause with their client
base
-
Chambers
of Commerce
-
Alumni
Associations with Business Owners
-
Churches
– Connect with other Businessmen
- Para Church Organizations like CBMC
- Your local YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization)
- Lone Star College System's Small Business Development Center
-
Other
Business Associations/Clubs, e.g., local Rodeos, Lions Clubs et al
NOTE: Also, you can find
out all the details of who lives in your zip code and others by going to the Zip Code Page.
5.
MEET WITH OTHER AREA BUSINESS OWNERS – A core
group of 3-6 Business Owners from each House District needs to team up and
develop and execute a plan; the plan laid out here works well.
6.
MEET YOUR SENATOR & REP/LETTERS ON THE RECORD
– Before the January 2009 Session begins in Austin, the core group of
business men from each District with the most influence (contacts et al) needs
to visit each Senator and Rep in person and present the letter which indicates the Area Business Owners are willing to do whatever it takes to
get the Business Margin Tax repealed, and have their Senator and Rep sign off
on getting the Business Margin Tax repealed. If the Senator and/or Rep gives excuses* and does not sign
off on their commitment to get the Business Margin Tax repealed, then the
Business Owners need to state that they will do everything in their power to
get the Rep replaced in the next election.
7.
E-MAIL LETTERS TO BOOT – All letters need to
be accumulated by BOOT and will be presented to the Governor and other
pro-business Senators at the start of the next Session in January 2009, so please
scan and e-mail all letters with whatever sign off or verbal
commitment you received from your Senator and Rep to info@boot4lessgov.org. If you need a fax number,
please e-mail info@boot4lessgov.org and a fax number will be e-mailed to you ASAP.
While in Session (Beginning January 2009)
While our Senators and Reps are in Session, starting in January 2009, each
core group needs to call, fax and e-mail their Senator and Rep reminding them
of their commitment to have the BMT repealed or be replaced. LET’S FLOOD THE
FAX MACHINE/IN BOX: Our way of saying thanks for all the political voice mails
we receive before each election!
In order for Business Owners to be successful, we must
work together on the above strategy, and BOOT will keep you updated via e-mail
on our progress!
Accountability is a terrible thing to waste!
